KOL AMI - THE VOICE OF OUR PEOPLE

"We watch the news and listen to the names of the fallen. We are always sad for the families and friends of the soldiers or civilians who have died. Another part of us is always hoping that we will not recognize a name. the name of a relative, friend, neighbor, business associate… then one day the inevitable happens. we recognize the name. we know the name. we know the parents of the name and the name becomes real and the grief and sorrow invades our very being.

Two days ago we laid to rest Tom Farkash z"l (of blessed memory) in the Military plot in Caesarea. The first in the new plot designated for the fallen of the Israeli Armed Forces. Is it too much to hope that he will be the last?

Thousands gathered to honor Tom. To say goodbye to this beautiful young man.  Thousands stood in silence as the body was laid in the ground. The military service ended and the thousands stayed in silence for over an hour while the family said goodbye, reading last letters, singing songs and releasing white doves. The voice of Tom's sister and father singing "The answer is blowing in the wind" resonated in my head as I walked back to our car.

A helicopter flew overhead shaking me back into the reality of this war and into my personal grief."
