I had never seen a Torah passed arm-to-arm around a synagogue
until I attended my first Kol Ami-NVRC service during the High Holy Days ... Cradling a Torah is a more personal, thought-provoking experience. As I held
the scroll like an infant that morning, I thought of my 9- and 17-year-old
daughters on either side of me and the meaningful tradition I was taking from
one and giving to the other.
The service itself – and in fact, as I came to find out, all services at Kol Ami
– had the same mix of Hebrew and English as those at the conservative shul I
had been attending. The prayers and hymns were the same. Even some of the tunes
were the same.

High Holiday Children Services
Rosh Hashanah Day
In the spirit of t’zedakah, charity, Kol Ami: NVRC
is sponsoring a food drive to benefit the
Northern Virginia
Branch of the Capital Area Food Bank. Serving 183 feeding organizations,
NVCAFB distributes over 2 million pounds of food to more than a quarter of a
million needy Northern Virginians annually.
This is Kol Ami/NVRC’s 5th annual High Holy Days Food Drive. Last year we donated
a phenomenal amount of canned and boxed foods. If
you would like to participate, please take the donation bag provided at Rosh
Hashanah services, fill it up and bring it back when you return for Yom Kippur.
