Shabbat Hosting

Dear Kol Ami Members and Friends,
We have great success hosting Shabbat services for Kol Ami, the Northern Virginia Reconstructionist Community (NVRC). We have several hosts for every service and it is a great relief knowing that preparation for our services is in good hands. All our hosts deserve our thanks! Give a hearty thank you to our members who support our services in such an important way, and remember, it is your responsibility to find a replacement if you cannot cover your date!  However, in emergencies, please contact the Shabbat host coordinator., Toby Greenwald.

What's involved? Hosting Shabbat includes the following -

  • Arriving at the service about 30 minutes before it start
  • Setting up 2 - 3 tables with tablecloths for beverages and food and information
  • Preparing pots of hot water for both coffee and tea and making sure they are turned on in time for the Oneg
  • Setting the tables with disposable plates, flatware, cups, sugar, and creamer
  • Pouring individual servings of juice and wine for Kiddush
  • Bringing the Shabbat "must haves" including challah and grape juice (you may choose to be reimbursed for expenses)
  • Setting up the name tag board and having blank name tags available
  • Helping to greet members and welcoming new visitors
  • Breaking down the setup, cleaning up tables and utensils, and storing goods in the storage closet
  • Notifying me of items to restock the inventory
  • Check out the Shabbat schedule and let me know if you prefer to host a particular Shabbat service.

Members are assigned to specific dates on a quarterly basis. Your willingness to help the Kol Ami community is truly appreciated. It takes cooperative efforts like this to keep our community vibrant.
